A fair man, he believed that any child who displayed magical abilities before their 11th birthday should be able to attend Hogwarts. Godric valued courage and bravery, believing these were the two most virtuous abilities a person can possess. Gryffindor was the original owner of the Sorting Hat, which he and his fellow founders enchanted to select people to be sorted into their houses, by seeing the qualities each founder valued the most. Gryffindor also had a sword made, which would present itself to any true Gryffindor in a moment of need. The sword became an important item a thousand years later, and was instrumental in defending Hogwarts from Slytherin’s descendant. He was allegedly the best friend of Slytherin before he left Hogwarts.

Hufflepuff House continues to be notable for those traits that Helga Hufflepuff herself prized: fairness, loyalty, and hard work.
The founder of Hufflepuff house; she was a kind and warm woman. The values a person must possess to be sorted into Hufflepuff house are those of loyalty, patience, and hard working above all else. It is also known that she brought the house-elves to Hogwarts. She owned a fine golden cup which was fairly innocuous aside from being her possession. The cup was sought by Lord Voldemort nearly a thousand years later, for him to turn it into a Horcrux. She was the best friend of Rowena Ravenclaw.

Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind.“—The Sorting Hat
Magical abilities and skills
- Magical arts: The founders taught no particular subjects to their students; they taught them a bit of everything. Thus, it is more than likely that Ravenclaw mastered all the basic branches of magic such as Transfiguration, Charms, Herbology, Potions and so on.
- Magical architecture: It is thought that Rowena Ravenclaw herself devised the ever-changing floor plan of Hogwarts Castle.
Ravenclaw values intelligence, creativity, learning, and wit.The house mascot is an eagle and the house colours are blue and bronze (blue and grey in the films). The head of this house is the Charms professor, Filius Flitwick, and the house ghost is The Grey Lady. According to Rowling, Ravenclaw corresponds roughly to the element of air. The founder of this house is Rowena Ravenclaw.
Founder of Ravenclaw House and one of the co-founders of Hogwarts, described with the other founders as “the greatest wizards and witches of the age.” According to Jo’s website, Ravenclaw was “the most brilliant witch of her time” She prized the students whose intelligence was surest FW), and had the motto, “Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.”
Rowena Ravenclaw had a fraught relationship with her daughter, Helena. Helena was jealous of her mother’s renown, and stole Ravenclaw’s prized diadem. Rowena was ashamed of this, and concealed it from everyone, even the other founders .When Rowena fell fatally ill, she attempted to get her daughter back for a reconciliation by sending the Bloody Baron after her, and Helena was killed as a result. Rowena Ravenclaw never recovered her diadem, and emotionally never recovered from her daughter’s betrayal. While the facts became obscured by time, it became part of her legend that she died of a broken heart .
The founder of Ravenclaw house, she was a sharp and intelligent woman. Intellect is a highly valued asset to the students of Ravenclaw house. Due to this, it is likely that Rowena wanted to make Hogwarts the very finest Wizarding school on earth, teaching those children with the highest intelligence. Rowena also had a daughter, Helena, who later became the Grey Lady of Hogwarts as a ghost. Helena stole her mother’s diadem, and it became lost. It was believed to have been lost for so long, that no one alive had seen it, however, it had actually been found by Lord Voldemort with the aid of the ghost of Ravenclaw’s daughter. He turned it into a Horcrux and later hidden once more, this time within the Room of Requirement, where it would remain hidden for at least 50 years years. She was the best friend of Helena Hufflepuff, even naming her own daughter after her friend.

Magical abilities and skills
- Parselmouth: Salazar Slytherin was one of the earliest recorded Parselmouths and used this ability to control a basilisk. His house’s symbol is a serpent due to this, and he passed this trait on to his descendants.
- Legilimency: Slytherin was said to have been a skilled Legilimens.
- Basilisk breeder: Slytherin managed to breed a basilisk and kept it alive in the Chamber of Secrets for over one thousand years, surpassing its average nine-hundred year lifespan.
- Dark Arts (possibly): There are rumours that he originally built the Chamber of Secrets as a place to teach students Dark Arts.
Slytherin house values ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness; the Sorting Hat said in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone that Slytherins will do anything to get their way. The house mascot of Slytherin is the serpent, and the house colours are green and silver. Salazar Slytherin founded the house. The Head of House is Severus Snape until near the end of the sixth book. Then, Horace Slughorn, the previous Head of House, comes out of retirement re-assuming authority. The ghost of Slytherin house is The Bloody BaronAccording to Rowling, Slytherin corresponds roughly to the element of water. The Slytherin dormitories and common room are reached through a bare stone wall in the dungeons. The Slytherin common room is a long, low, dungeon-style room, under the Hogwarts Lake, furnished with green lamps and carved armchairs. The room is described in the second book as having a greenish glow.
There is no reason to believe, however, that Muggle-born students are not sorted there, merely that pure-blooded students are more desirable to that house, as there are several examples of half-bloods in the house (such as Snape and Voldemort). In Deathly Hallows, a group of Snatchers claim that “not many Mudbloods” are sorted into Slytherin.
When believing Harry to be dead and thinking that he has final victory in his grasp, Voldemort proclaims his intention to abolish the other three houses and force all Hogwarts students into Slytherin. This design is foiled by his defeat and death, after which Slytherin becomes more diluted in its blood purity, no longer remaining the pure-blood bastion it once was. Its dark reputation, however, does linger.
Colors: Green and silver.
Salazar Slytherin was something of an egomaniac, which is why he built the Chamber of Secrets as a sort of monument to himself, as explained on Pottermore. This also may explain his appeal to another wizard who was impressed with himself – Tom Marvolo Riddle.
The founder of Slytherin house. Sly and cunning, he was not unlike many of the students he brought into his house. He believed strongly that only wizards of pure blood (i.e., those with a mother and father from wizarding families) should be allowed to attend Hogwarts. Slytherin caused great dispute over this with the other founders, and it eventually caused a permanent rift with Gryffindor, which led to Slytherin’s departure from the school. Before he left, however, he created the Chamber of Secrets, complete with a huge statue of himself and a horrible monster. Almost a thousand years later,Slytherin’s descendant, Lord Voldemort, would seek to fulfil his desires of banishing muggle-borns from Hogwarts, and exterminating them. One of his personal effects, a locket, was later claimed by Voldemort, to be used as a Horcrux. He was the best friend of Godric Gryffindor before the rift occoured and her left Hogwarts.
