Furious but even faster

10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Fate of the Furious

Opening April 14, The Fate of The Furious is the eighth installment in the high-octane Fast and the Furious film franchise. Before you take an adrenaline-packed ride with Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Charlize Theron, Kurt Russell and the rest of the Furious gang, check out these little-known fast facts about the film.

—Including the main cast cars, background and stunt cars used for actual filming, the film features close to 700 vehicles. Of those, about 100 remain, including multiples of the main “hero” cars which will be rebuilt and restored.

—Special effects coordinator J.D. Schwalm, and his team placed 180 pounds of high explosives into a frozen lake (with no aquatic life) to create the Iceland explosion scene. Cars were placed over the charges, while remote operated cameras captured the action.

—Longtime Fast stunt coordinators and brothers Jack and Andy Gill returned to spearhead action over Cuba, Cleveland and New York City. Over 100 stunt drivers both in front of the camera and behind it help pull off some of the film’s most memorable moments.

—The film was the first American production to shoot in Cuba.

—30 cars were catapulted out of a building and onto the ground below during the New York City sequence (also known as the “Zombie Car”) sequence, setting a new franchise record for the most car carnage topping Fast 5‘s vault sequence and FF6‘s tank sequence.

—100 of the mangled cars were used to create a “graveyard” where later scenes were filmed.

—The Fast “Toy Shop,” a vehicle garage created for production and featured in a scene of The Fate of the Furious, contained well over $17 million worth of vehicles.

—A one-of-a-kind $2 million Nissan concept car was flown in from Japan for filming.

—The Fate of the Furious features a Ripsaw “luxury tank,” courtesy of the U.S Department of Defense.

—The Fate of the Furious trailer debut ranks as the biggest ever, with more than 139 million online views in the 24 hours after its unveiling in Times Square.
